Gangtey Trek (3 Days)
Day 01 : Gangtey – Gogona 15 kms, 6 hrs
The trek leaves the valley at 2830m and leads south, then west through meadows and fields. It then climbs through a forest of juniper, bamboo, rhododendron and magnolia. The trail is rough and rocky. After crossing Tsele La(3440m) the trail crosses several meadows, then descends through forests to Gangak (3020m). It is then a short climb to the camp at Gogona(3100m).
Day 02 : Gogona – Khothangkha 16kms 6-7 hrs
The trail leads through a forest of firs, oak, spruce, dwarf rhododendron, miniature azaleas, cypress and juniper. A long but gradual climb leads to Shobju La(3410m). After Dolonga (2830m) you reach a clearing, Chorten Karpo, where there are four chotens dedicated to the four Je Khenpos who came from this areas. Camp will be here at 2790m.
Day 03 : Khothangkha – Tikke Zampa 12 km 5 hrs
A short, steep climb along a well worn path takes you to Tashila(2800m). This is the upper terminus of the ‘cable car’ that transports wood down to Chhuzomsa, 1300m below. The walk down is through a beautiful forest, with the undergrowth changing from rhododendron and magnolia to ferns and dwarf bamboo. The trail plunges down past steep terraced wheat fields to a cluster of houses at Wachay. The trail eventually meets the road at Tikke Zampa at 1500m.
