Tourism policy; “High Value, Low Volume Tourism”

Bhutan has only recently opened its doors to tourism; the Royal Government of Bhutan privatized the tourism industry in 1991. The Royal Government strictly follows a policy of high value, low impact/volume tourism. Bhutan maintains the number of tourists at a manageable level through a policy of government regulated tariff. Bhutan’s tourism industry is built on the principle of sustainability. All tourism activities carried out in the kingdom must be environmentally conscious, socially and culturally accepted and economically viable. Tourism is controlled in Bhutan also because we don’t have enough infrastructures to support unregulated tourism in the country.
